Why can't I record an Instagram story with my iPad?

hi. i tried to record videos using instagram story camera but it didnt work. i tried to remove then re-install the instagram and first few seconds, it worked but after i quit the instagram app and tried recording again, it didnt work. does this have to do with viruses or else? the day before, i was browsing on safari and this one website kept opening another random websites whenever i clicked on anywhere on the page. there was also a tab about warning about virus but i wasnt sure what to do so i just closed all the tabs.

Your iPad, unless jailbroken, cannot get any viruses.

Be careful, ignore those scam attempts and read this support article:--> Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support

As far as Instagram Story Camera is concerned, no native Instagram app has ever existed for iPads (only web version, or the iPhone app). For any further questions about instagram, please contact their support/developer team and ask them.

No one said you can't have Instagram on your iPad. Many, many do. What you fail to understand is the App is for iPhone and has never been released or optimized for iPad. And it seems Meta, the parent company of Instagram has no known plans to make an iPad version.

You can download just about any iPhone ONLY application to an iPad. It's just not designed for iPad, and cannot be counted on to work the same on iPad as it does on iPhone. And that would because iOS (iPhone) is NOT the same as iPadOS (iPad).

If that doesn't clear this up for you, please let me know what part you don't understand.

There is no Instagram app for iPad. That is fact. If someone downloads the iPhone app to their iPad, they are using an iPhone app, not an iPad app. There is a difference, even if people don't understand that. Instagram as I have said more than once in this thread has NEVER built an app for iPad.

Click this link --> https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252/

That is the link to the Instagram App in the App Store. It is the ONLY Instagram app in the App Store. And note at the top of the page where it clearly says - This app is available only on the App Store for iPhone.

What does that mean? It means the Instagram app is for iPhone ONLY. If you download the app on your iPad, you are downloading an iPhone app and functionality may or may not work. As many here are now seeing, it doesn't work on iPad as it does on iPhone.

Not sure why this is so difficult for people to understand?

This is going to sound weird. I had the same problem. When I open IG and click the plus sign, it gives me the option to go live, but then takes me to the camera screen and the only two options were post and story. So I tried recording a video and lo and behold, it would only take pictures. Figuring something was wrong with my camera permissions, I checked those. No problem. But clearly the video function wasn't working. So I downloaded tiktok to my ipad, went on there and recorded a 5 second video, discarded it, then went back to IG. For some reason that jumpstarted the camera and the live option shows up again on IG as it's supposed to. So now when I want to go live on my ipad on IG, I go to Tiktok first and give the camera a jumpstart. It's really weird and I dont understand why IG won't just give us a suitable ipad version. HOpe this helps.

Yes! Supportive in every way in this thread! It should be used as an example! That is why I have forwarded it to several of my Apple Friends! Instagram has replied to me for when I asked for help a week ago and I will provide the others the riveting I formation they gave me:

the record button on the reels and story is not functional at this time on the iPad application. Ha ha ha.

so they are aware and will prob wait for the new release to update and see if working. Like I said it stopped around the time I did the 15.5 on iPad so My guess is code is not jiving. I guess like my first post we will have to see if insta decides to fix early or wait for 16 all! Frustrating but best answer we will get for now I think from

I'll have to take your word there was ever long ago an iPad version of Instagram. Having been here on this forum for more than a decade and having used Instagram for many years, I can certainly tell you I never saw one.

I thought you might find this article from 9to5Mac interesting as it's an interview with the president of Instagram, who explains why they've never released an app for iPad --> https://9to5mac.com/2020/02/16/instagram-ipad-app-excuse/

Whether anyone should buy they don't have enough resources, is questionable, imho. But this is what Instagram has to say on the subject. Personally, while Apple has been taking iPad more into computer territory, that does not (again, imho) equate to a reason Instagram wouldn't have an app for iPad. If anything, iPad is becoming more content creation oriented. Seems perfectly suited to supporting Instagram. However, as I've been saying, this is their decision to make.

I haven’t been able to record reels or any videos through the Instagram app for many months now. I tried reinstalling many times and I filed a complaint through Instagram with no response. I have this problem on both my iPad min and iPad Pro.

As a content creator this is a serious problem, especially when you spend extra money on Apple’s best technology that’s available.

Your last statement would indicate you think Apple has somehow limited the functionality of Instagram. Apple can't do anything with Instagram. Apple doesn't own Instagram. Apple can't get into Instagram code. Apple can't fix this in any way. It's good you reached out to Instagram. But it's also clear, since Instagram has never released an App for iPad and only maintains Instagram for iPhone, they are not particularly concerned whether Instagram works on iPad, which has nothing to do with paying for Apple's best technology.

I'm sorry, but it is you who doesn't understand. Apple doesn't own Meta/Instagram. Apple provides app developers an API (Application Protocol Interface) to design apps for iOS or iPadOS devices. Instagram has NEVER made an app for iPad, nor supported the iOS version from iPhone on iPad. iOS and iPadOS while similar in look and feel are NOT the same operating system. Apple has no ability to go into Instagram code to change anything. Apple doesn't own Instagram code. If the iPhone app was previously working on iPad, then Instagram has made some change to the API on their app to make it not compatible with iPad. Why? Only Instagram would know.

Complaining here on Apple's user to user only forum gets you nothing. If you or anyone else is not happy about whatever change Instagram did to their iPhone App to make it not work as it may have at one time on iPad, complain to Instagram.

If this isn't clear, let me know what you don't understand.

SAME. Cannot use video, ig live, reels.p anymore on my ipad pro. It’s such a bummer that i can only use photos. Like seriously, wth. This should be solved.

Let Instagram know you think they should do something about this. But also keep in mind, they have NEVER bothered to create an iPad specific app, so they clearly aren't too concerned about functionality on iPad.

Here's how you can contact Instagram --> https://help.instagram.com/

I'll say it again.......Instagram does NOT have an iPad specific app. If you are using the Instagram app on your iPad, you are using the one designed specifically for iPhone. You can download iPhone only apps on an iPad. But that doesn't mean an iPhone specific app will work the same on an iPad and as you and all the others complaining here are learning, Instagram on iPad is not working correctly. And since Instagram has never released an iPad specific app for iPad, it's up to Instagram to address this.

It is not just you as you can see by the length of this thread and the link above can help you contact them to report it. You can also preform the action and “shake”your device. A pop up will show and ask if you want to report a problem. The more people who say something to Instagram may affect their decision to support iPad but I doubt it as it would take more resources for them to dedicate to iPad exclusively. Here’s hoping! 🤞🏼

You have iOS 15.6 on your iPhone. You have iPadOS 15.6 on your iPad. They are not exactly the same. If you go to the App Store, you'll see the Instagram App is for iPhone. Not iPhone and iPad. Instagram has to fix this. Apple cannot.

It's high time Instagram made an iPad app. They have chosen not to. That's on them. Contact them and express your wants. They know their app isn't working with recording video on iPad.

Jun 19, 2022 12:50 PM in response to christinanoticemepls

Then it would be up to Instagram to fix it. Apple provides the API's to ALL app developers in advance of any iPadOS updates. If the app developers don't incorporate changes into their code, Apple can't get into it to fix it. But the fundamental issue here is Instagram for only reasons they must know has NEVER supported their app on iPad. Perhaps they simply don't want their iPhone only app to work on iPad. I can't answer that. You can't either. But you need to let Instagram know.

Given Instagram has never intended for their app to run on iPad, it would seem they simply don't care. The reality is for years people have been asking for an iPad version of Instagram. After all these years, they haven't listened to their customers. That's on them. NOT Apple.

hey, i think what lobsterghost1 is trying to say is that the app you showed in the screenshot, was initially made for Phones. (iOS, android, LG, etc.) which is why when you open the app on an iPad, there’s black borders. That’s because the Instagram app was/is not made specifically for an iPad, or any tablet for that matter. You will only see Instagram in a 16:9 screen format. iPhone OS (iOS) is what instagram was specifically made for, not iPadOS (which is what iPads use). Like they said, Instagram unfortunately has no future plans to make an Instagram app for iPads. I use an iPad 9th generation, so I understand the frustration haha. Since Apple can’t do anything about this, you need to contact the people who made the app: Instagram.

Contacting Apple is pointless, they have nothing to do with Instagram, and most likely won’t even see this thread.

Contacting Instagram will probably be selfsame.

Anyways, I had the same problem as everyone else, I couldn’t record any Instagram videos, record any reels, or go live. But now it’s fixed, I’m still trying to figure out how, but now I can record on Instagram using an iPad. I hope everybody else can too.
