Having updated to iPadOS15, you have now encountered the “Shelf” - this being a new feature of the now revised iPadOS multitasking environment.

iPadOS permits you to have multiple “instances” of the same App - each instance being self contained. The shelf, when triggered, shows a thumbnail of each running instance of an App.

For example, if you have three running instances of Safari, each with its own set of open tabs, you will see three thumbnails corresponding to each running instance of Safari - plus a button to open a new instance of Safari. Simply tapping a thumbnail will switch directly to that running instance of Safari. Each App - such as Mail, Safari, Notes, Calendar, etc. - has its own corresponding shelf.

Individual open instances of an App can be closed directly from the Shelf; just swipe the unwanted thumbnail off the top of the screen. Note however, that Multitasking and associated Shelf functions cannot be disabled.

Removing the Shelf:

Sounds like you are referring to the "shelf". Apparently, there are multiple windows open (in this case open emails). So, either (A)delete or send out the eMail, or (B)swipe your finder up to close the window.

A. Ridding of Items:

  1. Go Here: Use multitasking on your iPad - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: Use the shelf on your iPad
  3. As it Reads: You can also swipe up on a thumbnail in the shelf to close that window.

B. Recommend this to Apple:

Do your part: Unfortunately, there may be no way to rid of this feature. So, recommend to apple that they remove it. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what their customers don't prefer, and what to not to include in iPadOS visions to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPad - Apple
  2. Select: "Other" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that you what this to not be an option, and why. Include the URL of this post.
  4. Proceed from there aw necessary
