Yes, that's correct. Unless something is actively happening (like things being downloaded), WiFi disconnects when the phone locks.

Disconnecting WIFi on Lock Screen has got to be the dumbest idea that Apple has ever come up with ! And this will probably be my last IPHONE for that very reason.
It saves power. And it's been that way probably since the first iPhone. But, you should always buy the tool that best meets your needs.
