stuck in reboot after trying to upgrade os monterey

My iMac does not reboot anymore after I was trying to upgrade to osMonterey. I have tried all the usual suggestions . Safe mode does not work either. It starts to reboot, stops, 1 chime and turns off...a few seconds later 1 chime turns on and tries to reboot, same thing over and over again. Help! What can I do? Nothing I tried works. It is an old iMac but I do not want to replace it because I hardly use it. I have all my other apple devices that I constantly use but not the iMac. Still I need it to work!

I actually can't believe that I am frequently asked to update and when I finally do nothing works anymore.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Try holding down the power button for about 15 seconds. If that does not work please follow the steps in If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support. If the the computer has an internal HD the HD may have failed. This can occur as major updates tax hard drives quite a bit, so a HD that is not in great shape to begin with can fail under the stress.
