Accessory Not Supported

All of a sudden, I get this error when I get in my car: "Accessory Not Supported, This accessory is not supported by this device." The iPhone is no longer connected to my head unit in the Honda Civic for hands free calling and it no longer connects to CarPlay using the Lightning cable. This is a NEW problem. Both of these functionalities have been working great for a year now. I'm using iOS 15.5 on an iPhone 11 Pro.

You will get that message if the phone is not unlocked when you plug it in; the port is disabled after the phone has been locked for over an hour as a security measure. You can turn this feature off in Settings/Face ID [Touch ID] & Passcode, USB Accessories. To turn the feature off turn the switch ON (I know, strange).

The other possible causes are a defective cable, or dirt in the Lightning port on the phone. Clean it with a bright light to see and a toothpick.

Your phone can’t connect by any method. That’s why it is at exactly the same time. The trust relationship between the head unit and your phone was broken for some reason. But if you had said that it didn’t work with Bluetooth OR the cable the first time it would have simplified responding.

From here I can only speculate, but I suspect that the certificate in the head unit expired, and its firmware needs to be updated.

It’s likely that the message referred only to the Bluetooth connection, and it might have been local BT interference→Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support.

Or just rebooting the head unit fixed it. As I’m sure you know the maxim that goes back centuries: “When in doubt, reboot” 😏
