migration of Mac to Mac

I am not very computer savvy, but I got a new Mac today with better processors and more ram and hard drive. I started the set up, and then the migration assistant. It has been running for over 10 hours and I decided to cancel it. Nothing has transferred. Not a single document.

We started with our high speed internet which was transferring at 47 mbs, but decided to try the thunderbolt cable that said it was 28 mbs. So we went with the faster one over our high speed internet.

But it did not help. Not a single megabyte transferred in 10 + hours of the migration assistant.

I dont understand.
