Can I transfer the 2 x 1600 MHz DDR3 memory modules taken from my 2012 27 inch iMac to upgrade the memory in my 2020 27 inch iMac from 16GB to 32GB? The two sets of modules have different capacities:

  • The 2 x 8GB modules supplied with the refurbished 27 inch iMac 2020 are 2666 MHz DDR4 SDRAM
  • The 2 x 8GB modules supplied with old 2012 27 inch are 1600 MHz DDR3 memory modules

+1 no you cannot. If you want to upgrade the 2020 iMac please only use either Crucial.com or Macsales.com RAM. Why, simple! iMacs are sensitive to using quality RAM and both vendors supply very high quality products, have very fair pricing, provide great service and offer life time warranties on their RAM. In short there is no reason to not use them.
