Hello, I am running MacOS Mojave on my earl 2015 13 inch MacBook Air. I was editing a video in iMovie and after I imported an MP3 file and pressed play, the sound was off. Checked that soundtrack volume was at 100 percent, Mac volume was on. Still played with no sound. I tried other clips (played sound OKAY) and another MP3 (played with no sound.) Please Help!!!

iMovie does support Mp3 audio, so the sound should play. You might try deleting/resetting preferences to see if that cures the issue. To delete preferences, open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
If still no success, try converting the Mp3 to AAC or aiff.

Possibly the song is DRM protected. If so, it would not play or show wave forms.
Possibly the issue is confined to just this one project. You could try placing the song in another project.
I think that there is something about the way that your source for the Mp3 files is rendering them in an incompatible way for iMovie. You might try importing the song from another source, such as iTunes in AAC format.

Instead of in the timeline, try playing the song in the Project Media browser view pertaining to the project. Will it play there?

UPDATE (as of 7/3/22):
I updated to Catalina and it works now with the imported MP3!!
This still did not work with the song. But, strangely, when I use a song from the 'Jingles" folder in iMovie Package Contents (a .caf file), it does work. When I check the waveforms for the audio, I do not see any.
For some reason, both options did not solve the issue with the file. The rest of the movie plays fine, but not this song.
