unidentified characters in terminal window (myname@boss-пк)

Hi everyone,

While using a terminal today I noticed strange characters after my computer name on the terminal. What does it mean? How can I get rid of it?

  • it is a default window of the terminal.

Assuming your Mac's name is correctly shown in System Preferences > Sharing, it is possible you inadvertently changed the default Terminal prompt.

If your Mac's name is correct, please write back for instructions regarding the Terminal prompt.

Doesn't mean much...just depends on what you want to see.

Return the default prompt (note the trailing empty space) copy & paste:

export PS1="%n@%m %1~ %# "

ex. username@MacBook-Pro ~ %

You can customize the prompt...

changed this with:

export PS1="%m %1~ %# "

ex. MacBook-Pro ~ %
