Which Macbook Pro to get in 2022

Hey guys,

I am looking to purchase a new laptop and am unsure about which one to go for given the lineup in 2022. Here is a summary about what I do, a "worst case scenario" of how hard it will be pushed, a summary of what I currently have, and what I am thinking of purchasing.

What I do:

  • Software Engineer (mobile, full stack web, and some ML / DL)
  • Drone hobbyist

Worst Case Scenario (running all at once):

  • Running Xcode
  • Running Android Studio
  • Running VS Code
  • Running iOS simulator
  • Running Android Emulator
  • Running terminal processes
  • Chrome open with a lot of tabs
  • Two monitors
  • Possibly Photoshop, but not very common

  • I also use Final Cut Pro for 4K editing (Just a hobby and somewhat rare. Not included in "worst case.")

Currently Have:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • 1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
  • 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
  • 500 GB storage

  • Consistently gets VERY hot
  • Fans blaring
  • Ran out of storage
  • Out of memory errors

Thinking About Getting:

  • 16" M1 Pro: 2 TB storage + 32 GB ram

Questions:

  • Does this seem like the right choice given my usage?
  • Should I wait for the "M2 Pro"?

Note: time is somewhat of a restraint, but if the later models are worth the wait I would consider pushing it back.

No doubt Apple will release an M2 Pro and Max later. How much later, is the real question. It took them a year from the release of the M1 to the release of the M1 Pro and Max. Assuming they can do it faster this time, I would not expect them before the end of the year if then, more likely some time early next year. If you can wait that long for an M2 Pro, then sure wait it out.

Otherwise, I agree with the others, the 14" M1 MBP with the 32GB of RAM is an excellent choice at this point in time.

The first round of M2 does not include a 16"...

not to mention the initial M2 only supports 1 external monitor (just like the initial 13" M1.)

Thanks for the reply! The M2 comment was directed towards later models. I am aware that the current M2 model does not fit my needs; however, I was wondering if there are plans for a later release that would? Ex: an "M2 Pro" chip.

You can always step up to MBP 16 MAX— why not, If money is not an issue— I don't think there is a bad choice.

I would talk to your "Software Engineer" buddies and find out what their impressions, experiences, limitations, and recommendations are on the current model of interest...
