Encrypting a flash drive

I am unable to encrypt a flash drive on my m1 mac. I go to disk utility to erase and format it and there is no "Scheme" option under the format options, therefore I cannot format it in order to encrypt it under file vault. I read somewhere this was an issue with m1 macs, is that the case? Work around? This computer is basically worthless to me without this feature.

You have to "Show All Devices" from the View popup menu. Then, erase the device.
