AnnieL2,
Yes, in order to set up Intercom, you would need a HomePod or HomePod mini:
Set up Intercom
To use Intercom, update your HomePod mini or HomePod speakers to the latest software. Then check that every device that you want to send and receive Intercom messages from—your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch—is up to date. After you update, Intercom will be turned on automatically.

Greetings kremar1,
You found just the right article, Use HomePod mini or HomePod as an intercom
Have you attempted to send an Intercom message? Do you have all your Home devices (Home Pod(s), iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS devices) updated to the latest available operating system version?
Thanks.
Hey AnnieL2
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Is it essential to own a Homepod / Homepod mini for Intercom to work? Because I don't own one, however I know that you can also Intercom between iPhones/Apple Watches etc. of family members. But when I asked Siri to intercom, she told me that I don't own a Homepod. Do you really need one?
I would find that a bit odd because if you intercom between two iPhones for example, why would you need a HomePod for that to work?
And yes, all of my devices are updated to the newest OS version.
Thanks for your patience.
Kind regards
Thanks a lot bailier for this quick answer!
