Apple Music randomly plays when I remove AirPods

This issue has been an ongoing one for me. Occasionally — not always but just often enough to be a hassle — my iPhone starts playing Apple Music when I remove my AirPods Pro.

This started a number of years ago. At the time, I never even used Apple Music. One day, I said “Hey Siri, play some jazz.” And jazz music started playing via Apple Music. But ever since then, I’ll take out my AirPods after watching YouTube or playing a game or something, and then my phone starts playing jazz via Apple Music — an app I never intentionally use.

Recently I subscribed to Apple One, which includes Apple Music, and the frequency of the random playing has increased. I casually browsed Apple Music once, and now when I remove my AirPods, my phone starts playing random songs related to the ones I browsed through.

In short, I don’t want my phone to play ANYTHING after I take out my AirPods, much less random songs from an app I don’t actively use.

Add me to this club with the AirPod Pros.

I remove my Airpod(s) after making a phone call and Apple Music starts playing.

I remove one of my Airpods (in noise cancellation mode) while on a plane so I can hear the flight attendant, and Apple Music starts blaring in the other ear.

If it's a bug, fix it Apple. If there is a setting that could be changed, let us know. I suspect it's the former, however. It's incredibly annoying as it is.

It is annoying, but I am 99% convinced that it's directly related to the pods picking up a hard snapping sound: if I close the case with a snap, music almost always plays (from what appears to be the most accessible source: Spotify, Apple Music; an open tab); if I close it gently, 100% it never plays. Although it did start when I slammed a car door the other day..... So yes, major headache and they should fix it, but also a pretty easy workaround. Good luck!

I have this exact same issue with my iPhone 13 and iPad with my AirPods Pro. I use Apple Music but not when the issue happens. When I take my AirPods out after using them to play YouTube or something similar and put them in the case Apple Music will start playing a song from the phone speakers I had been listening to, sometimes weeks ago. I have tried to force closing Apple Music to see if that works but that is really a work around, not a solution.

I use my airpods pro for noise reduction, so I often wear them without playing any audio. But EVERY time I remove them, my iPhone begins playing whatever I was last listening to, even if that had been days ago and I had closed that app. I haven't tried turning off ear detection, nor am I going to, because I want that functionality. I just don't want the iPhone to start playing anything at any time unless I tell it to start playing. That seems a reasonable request.

So, Apple won't like this answer but it works and maybe when they realize this is a work around that will fix MUSIC from automatically launching and playing, they will do something about it finally…

The issue is that the touch buttons are way too sensitive, and ultimately they will just start playing MUSIC automatically every time you hit the switch, there is no way to turn this off in the setting from what I can see, Doing a slow touch setting under the sensor controls seems to help a little, Turning of ear detection doesn't work either.

The only thing that does is....

Delete the MUSIC app from the phone, I literally never use it and have no plans to in the future, streaming is fine.

By doing this the music app will not be launched and play every time you accidentally touch the button and if no media app was recently exited nothing will happen at all...

A very unfortunate way to have to solve this but it is solved!

You're Welcome, maybe get on this one!

I'm honestly very disappointed in the actually user experience from the Airpod Pro's 2, thats rare Apple, do better.

Cheers.

And this problem is getting worse with each new iOS update. As does the performance of my HomePod and HomePod minis with their bursts of random music and songs stopping with 1 second left (extremely jarring). When this generation of my Apple devices dies in the next year or two (as they tend to do), I will be seriously seeking out non-Apple solutions. I may have to learn Linux but I will not keep giving Apple my money as their products get worse and worse.

I found a way to stop the AirPods from playing music when you pinch the switch.

open Apple Music. You don’t have to sign up, just look at the bottom of the app screen. There is a shuffle and a repeat button. Touch each button to toggle until they are not highlighted. That should stop music being played even when you pinch the switch.

I was having the same issue as others on this thread. I have never used Apple Music and have not subscribed, but would get music playing when I pinched the switch. I’m guessing the default for Apple Music is a U2 album with shuffle and repeat turned on.

worked for me. Hope it works for you.
