Second monitor display power consumption

Hi everyone,

I have a second monitor connected on my iMac since a few years.

It's a iiyama ProLite XB2779QQS-S1 27 inch 5K monitor connected to the display port of my Lacie 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 drive.

Since 2018 everything works fine, but the last months my CPU goes in maximum when i use for example a YouTube video in full screen mode, or open multiple apps simultaniously, etc.

The fan is blowing at the max all the time and the sound is "shaking" when the CPU goes in the red.

I haven't this issue never before, but lately it's happening daily, even when I do nothing without any apps open and the standard screensaver turns on after 5 minutes of doing nothing.

Today I have try to shut down this second monitor and it looks that everything run a lot smooter and beter with the second displaay turned of.

Is this recognisable for anyone of you and what can be done about it?

Thank you for any solution of this problem

Regards

Luc

Hello Luc,

With your second monitor connected and in use we recommend reviewing your Activity Monitor. This user guide will explain in more detail: Activity Monitor User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

Activity Monitor can help you view the task that is being used that the time the behavior happens. Once you've evaluated what task or tasks are causing this behavior you can isolate further. Another great step to isolate is booting in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

This article contains next steps if the behavior does or does not persist.

Yes, I was able to test in safe mode.

i only am wondering why the CPU and the fan are running very high since the last few months?

i have the 2nd monitor on my iMac since 2018 and never had any isseu. Now the CPU & fan are running very high just after

startup without any apps open. Then when I move my mouse and the screensaver goes away, I need to wait 3 minutes before I can do anything on my iMac.

And if I open a page in a browser on full screen mode, the CPU is going again way up.

Same with other full screen modes or using for example Final Cut Pro in full view.

Now, when I turn of the 2nd display, the CPU runs more slower.

Could it be the 2nd monitor is malfunction and ask to much power from the iMac?
