Creating an APFS drive with internal + external SSD

Hello community

I've run into following problem. I'm a music professional and just bought a new Mac mini M1 with the smallest 246GB drive option as my content takes quite a lot of space , external drive would be logical choice for them.

However, I have a back up size of around one 1TB in size and the internal drive is only 256 GB, furthermore (which is the main problem) a lot of the plug-ins and another Music related software is scattered around the system Folders and user folders. This is why it's almost impossible for me to separate the system and the content to different drives.

Anyway my question is, before installing 0SX can I create a APFS drive including the internal SSD and external thunderbolt/ USB 3 Drive? I was trying to do this, but didn't find a way to do this.

Your help would be much appreciated

Hey there hermanni289,

In order to add an APFS volume on your Mac, you'll want to follow the steps below:

Each volume you add to an APFS container can have a different APFS format, if needed.
In the Disk Utility app  on your Mac, select an existing APFS volume in the sidebar, then click the Add Volume button  in the toolbar.
If Disk Utility isn’t open, click the Launchpad icon  in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the Search field, then click the Disk Utility icon .
Enter a name for the new APFS volume.
Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose an APFS format.
If you want to manually manage APFS volume allocation, click Size Options, enter values in the fields, then click OK.
Reserve Size: The optional reserve size ensures that the amount of storage remains available for this volume.
Quota Size: The optional quota size limits how much storage the volume can allocate.
Click Add.
When the operation is finished, click Done.
