Loading music to a family managed Apple Watch SE

How do you load music onto an Apple Watch SE that is managed by another phone?

i.e., a child's watch with cellular but being managed/synced to a parent's iPhone

There are repeated questions in these forums for 1+ yrs, and nearly every answer points to this page:

Add music to Apple Watch - Apple Support

However, that page does NOT have the answer.

My child has an Apple Watch SE - GPS + Cellular (A2353) running OS 8.6.

I (parent) have an Apple iPhone 13 Mini (MLHM3LL/A) running iOS 15.5

The child's watch is being managed through the iPhone as a second watch (I have an older watch of my own).

Both of us have unique Apple IDs and they are part of Family Sharing.

I have a library of music associated with my ID that is able to be shared to all of our family members' other devices (iPads & iPhones).

If I open the Music app from the Watch, it shows "Radio" and "Library" and a message that we must subscribe to Apple Music to share. If I tap on Library, I see Playlists, Albums, Artists, and Songs, but all are empty.

If I open the Watch app from my iPhone, I can see two watches. If I select my own watch, I see everything as expected, with a Music option where I can add Playlists and Albums to my own watch for syncing once I'm plugged in.

BUT if I open the Watch app from my iPhone and select my CHILD's watch, there is no Music app listed, even though I can see the app from the Watch itself so I know it's installed.

I am therefore unable to select Playlists and Albums to sync to my child's watch.

I have disabled all Screen Time restrictions on my child's account so I don't think that's the problem.

I know others have had this issue, but the help page that usually gets shared does not address adding music to a managed watch.

Just for others' future reference...

I connected with Apple Support Chat about this issue and they confirmed that syncing local music to a managed watch is not possible unless you either 1) subscribe to Apple Music streaming or 2) you put the same Apple ID on both the watch and the phone.

The problem, of course, with putting the same Apple ID on the Watch and the iPhone is that then you're sharing calls and messages with your child.

The frustrating thing is that my child's Apple ID is capable of syncing this music on other devices like an iPad that sync directly with my computer. But as it stands, the iPhone's Watch app can only manage the single Apple ID that is in use by the iPhone itself. You're unable to load a child's Apple ID on the iPhone, even sandboxed within the Watch app, so the iPhone is unable to manage any features on a managed watch that depend directly on that unique child's Apple ID.

I've submitted a 'feature request' at their suggestion, for one of two solutions.

Either 1) allow for managing Apple Watch's directly from a Mac, where you can be given more options, or

2) allow the iPhone's Watch app to 'store' more than one Apple ID, so that you can load your child's Apple ID for syncing purposes.

Their reasoning for not allowing this loading of multiple Apple IDs in one Watch app is that it's for privacy purposes because this managed watch feature isn't only used for parent-child relationships, but I digress.

Thanks Chris_C1,

That's what I was afraid of... but to be clear, I'm not interested in enabling streaming for my child's watch.

I only want to sync owned music to my child's watch so that it can be played locally.

There's no way to sync music that I already own to a managed Apple Watch?

Because that IS possible on my own watch.

That is a big missing feature that I don't believe is documented anywhere in the purchase or support documentation.

I would have thought twice about buying an Apple Watch for my child if I knew it couldn't play my music library the way the rest of my devices can.

Thank you SnickZ, but those instructions unfortunately still don't help.

My Watch app on my iPhone lists two watches: my own and my child's.

If I click on my own watch, I see the Music button in the list and I can add Songs and Playlists exactly as expected.

However, if I click on my child's managed watch from my iPhone, the Music button is not listed, exactly as shown in Botanita's screen shot and as described in my original post.

This seems to be a bug, or lacking feature, specifically with a managed watch. I cannot load local music onto the managed watch from my library.

Thanks for getting back to us, coche155. It’s appreciated. However, we neglected to point out the other option from the page in the Apple Watch User Guide.

Add music to Apple Watch - Apple Support -- Since you don’t subscribe to Apple Music, you’ll need to add music from your Music Library from the Watch app on your iPhone.

You can add specific playlists and albums to your Apple Watch using the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, you can also add music with the Music app  directly on your Apple Watch.

You’ll find the steps under "Add music using your iPhone

Give those steps a try and please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

SnickZ.
