Which can be inferred to mean the configuration doesn’t work, or doesn’t work reliably.

The Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter is known to work, as are some others.

You have to attach it directly to the Mac; with a USB-A to USB-C adapter if needed. Hubs and docks will prevent it from working.
