How can I create a keyboard shortcut on mac and disable native document shortcuts

I have created a keyboard shortcut by following the guide here. For this shortcut, I have made "Control + F" linked to "Find" in menus. This allows me to more fluidly swap between Linux and OSx workflows. This shortcut nearly always works in most apps.

I run into a problem that I believe is sourced here in this support link. Essentially, under "Document shortcuts" I see this:

  • Control-F: Move one character forward.

Now if I'm in Chrome and I have clicked anywhere on a web page, "Control + F" just moves my cursor forward in that page. Once I have applied any focus to a web page, I can no longer search the page without clicking through 3 menus with my mouse.

Control key and Command key are baked into the macOS— trying to change the behavior universally is asking for issues.

Command F is the default Find command.

You can try some third party to override—

I moved away from Karabiner a little while back because MacOS seemed like they offered native solutions that I figured would work better, but I'll check it out again.

It is disappointing that the Apple recommended answer is, essentially, "using the native, recommended Apple keyboard shortcuts system is asking for trouble, give up or try a third party."
