Never set up passcode on iPad only faceid

My new iPad is asking for password to enable Face ID but I never set up a password

There is no way you can set up Face ID without creating a passcode first. And remembering that passcode is very important as there are times you will have to enter it, even if you have set up Face ID. You have to enter the passcode if you turn off the iPad, then turn it on. You have to enter it after you do a software update.
