You do not have permission to save files to this location.

Why all of a sudden do I receive the below message in Excel after using the same step to save a file & rename since I purchased my macBook Pro?

"You do not have permission to save files to this location."

Have updated to Mac Monterey 12.4

Backed up mac 6th June 2022

I have read & write permission

I don't have a clue where to start.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

Where exactly are you trying to save a file?

In recent versions of the OS, you need to explicitly give permission to applications to save files to some locations, like your Desktop or your Documents; other locations, like the top level of the drive, are completely off-limits, and that is a good thing.

If you trust an application, you can give it "Full Disk Access" in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy.

Also check that it appears with the relevant permissions in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy->Files and Folders

You shouldn't use slashes in file names. In Unix, the underlying operating system, uses slashes as folder separators, and the file name is really the full path.

What's odd is Finder seems to convert the slash to a colon when viewed in the command line, but a colon is the folder separator in past Mac OS's. It's still used in AppleScript.

I don't know if that is what is causing the problem.

So, where are you trying to save those files? Full Path to the folder? Relative path in your home?

G'Day P. Philips & Luis,

It's a monthly expenses file in excel. I save a file eg EXPENSES - JAN/22 the I open it save it as EXPENSES - FEB/22 add February's expenses then save and so on and so on for the financial year.

So I did the same thing as per usual but this time I get "You do not have permission to save files to this location"
