Sidecar keeps freezing on iPad

This is pathetic on Apple’s part, as this thread is far too old for there to be no resolution. One of the primary reasons I bought the new 15” MacBook Air was to use the sidecar feature, but nope; Can’t use it because of this issue. I find this inexcusable and I’m tired of the unjustified good will Apple gets for making things “just work.” They don’t. I’m so mad.

Felt the need to create an account for the Apple forums to emphasize that this issue still occurs over a year later. MacBook Air 2019 and iPad Mini 6th Generation. No excuse for Apple to have not addressed this.

This issue is also driving me nuts, it slows down my productivity a lot. Sometimes when it freezes, simply toggling the display works. Other times, I’ll have to restart the iPad. Apple, this issue is making me go crazy and it has been an issue for a long time now.

This is absolutely inexcusable. I've wasted too much time with sideCar.

Not a great precursor to connecting the $3500 Vision pro to the MacBooks, is it?

With mac sales down 30-40 percent, stuff like this matters!!

i don't give one rat's behind about any new features offered on macOS or ipad os until stuff like this is resolved. Period.

Start freezing 52 hours after rebooting iPad.

I would have changed the Sort By preference and have a closer look at the comments before posting.

Nothing has changed. Keeps disconnecting and freezing. There is a workaround that helps for like few minutes. From the source Mac select screen mirroring option and click on hide sidebard and show sidebar. It will reconnect the external iPad back but literally for like few minutes.

There is no new update push recently and nothing has changed in these years despite all the updates.

By the way, disconnecting is not the same as freezing, when it freezes, it will not show any message about disconnection on both devices, the Mac just act as like it’s still connected.

Yes, looks like recent updates did the job. I've noticed that a pop up appears in sonoma stating that iPad wifi is off during sidecard connection. Still monitoring the situation but have to confirm it's rock solid stable after recent updates.

Any feedback?

I have brand new M2 macbook air running sonoma 14.4.1 and have massive freezing issues - never disconnects either cable or not but just freezes for between 3 and 10 seconds at a time. Sometimes freezes 5 times a minute

My MacBook Air M2 with iPad 10th Gen have been completely unusable for 4 months. Freezing every 10-30 seconds and making the setting impossible to work on.

Having tried all the suggestions on every thread that I could find I contacted Apple support. They gave me the advice to reinstall the OS completely. 6 hours later, the problem persists.

I was browsing through the settings of my ipad and saw App Activities in the background... turned off all background activities and the freezing stopped...

I used it for a while without any freezing or lockups and then switched background activities back on. It still works fine. Very strange and perhaps not a solution for others, but for me it seems to have worked at least for the time being.

Dosen't anyone notice the full-size keyboard doesn't show up when trying to search in one of the files opened together using stage manager in the files app. The iPads in Apple Stores also exhibit this bug.

If you want to be productive and multitasking, this is a must.

They don't seem to care at all and are unable to deliver the advertised functionality.

After trying all 'solutions' seen on internet, none worked for me, finally I found one. It works great, no more lags or from time to time (or constant) frozen keyboard, mouse or trackpad. Anyway let me say that this solution is not for everyone because it requires to connect both an external monitor and the iPad to your computer, in my case a MacBook Air 2024 + ASUS ZenScreen portable monitor plugged via Apple ThunderBold usb-c cable + my iPad Air 2024 connected via WiFi to my local network. Once I attached the external monitor all problems gone!!, no more issues. Why?, perhaps it's because some driver is activated for the external monitor and is also affecting in some way to iPad?, I don't know, but it works, at least for me.

I was so desperate for a solution and so happy to FINALLY find one that I decided to report it to Apple guys (obviously no reply) but they already know. I'm sure they receive thousands of reports and to pretend to be replied is a little naive, but ok, if they want to investigate here it is ;)

Well, I hope at least this helps to other users...

I have exactly the same issue since i upgraded to MacOS 12.4 (Macbook Pro M1 Pro) and iPadOS 15.5 over usb using apple cable.
