UPS use with IMAC 24

Once you set up the UPS options in system preferences do you have to keep the UPS USB cable connected to the computer?

No, but leaving it connected will allow you to specify options for when the Mac is operating on UPS power. Otherwise, there is no way for the Mac to know whether it is on UPS power or not.
