Restoring gmail integration in Mail

Gmail's latest security protocols leave me unable to send or receive gmail messages in the Mail program on my MacBook Air as I always have, though the integration still works fine on my iPhone. It seems Google only wants gmail to integrate with third party applications that use 2-step authentication. I've enabled this in my Google settings but I don't see anything in my laptop's Mail that allows me to activate this feature. I've spent hours with the Google and Apple knowledge bases without finding the solution to restoring this basic functionality. Any help here? Thanks.

Sign in using app passwords

Copy and paste selected aspects from above link

Create and use app passwords

Note: If you use 2-Step-Verification and are seeing a 'password incorrect' error when trying to access your Google Account, an app password may solve the problem.

  1. Go to your Google Account.
  2. On the left navigation panel, choose Security.
  3. On the 'Signing in to Google' panel, choose App passwords. If you don’t see this option:
    • 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account
    • 2-Step Verification is set up for security keys only
    • Your account is through work, school or other organisation
    • You’ve turned on Advanced Protection for your account
  1. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app that you’re using.
  2. Choose Select device and choose the device that you're using.
  3. Choose Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the app password. The app password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Choose Done.

Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an app password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorising it.
