Why are older versions of Safari not loading certain websites?

I'm currently using a MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2012 computer with OSX Yosemite as the operating system and I use Safari 10.1.2 as my main web browser. I've noticed that since the fall of 2020, Safari 10 and older versions of Safari are no longer loading various websites(eg wikipedia, youtube to name a few). Why is this so? Is there a way of resolving this via 'Preferences' on Safari, or are older web browsers being relegated to obsolescence in an effort to encourage users to update their operating systems? I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me. Thanks.

Nothing in Safari Preferences will fix this issue.

Realize, Yosemite was released in October 2014 and a lot Technology has changed since then.

Websites coding etc has changed too and the newer Code in websites may just be beyond the abilities of an 8 Year Old Browser

Having a MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2012 does offer the user the ability to upGrade to several newer versions of macOS

Should the user wish to explore that possibility, refer to below.

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements This is the Last Qualify Version of macOS this computer can run

macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements

macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements

macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements

OS X El Capitan - Technical Specifications

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may required update or upGrades to 64 Bit Versions.

www.brave.com but you will have to check if Yosemite is supported

MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2012 computer in 2022 = 10 year old Battery.

This may seem harsh, but what expectations does the User have?

Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

Hi Mr Phillips, thanks for your detailed and informative response. The thing is, I don't plan on upgrading my operating system as I've tried doing so and I found that the newer the operating system, the worse the battery life seemed to get. I also found that Mozilla Firefox and a few other web browsers are able to load the websites that Safari 10 is unable to, but the battery life deteriorates significantly if I use Firefox compared to if I use Safari. Do you happen to know of any web browser other than Opera or Firefox that could load websites that Safari 10 is unable to which is comparable to Safari in terms of offering good battery life?

Thanks again, Mr Phillips. I'll check and see of Brave is compatible with Yosemite and give it a try if it is.

Regarding my battery, I actually replaced it two years ago, so it's currently two years old. The decrease in battery life when progressing successively from one operating system to the next was observed in the case of the new battery of which the capacity was >90%.
