Mac showing wrong date and time

My Mac is showing the wrong date & time even though I have chosen the right region, and selected "set date and time automatically". The time zone is also in the right region. I have not switched on my macbook in a while so I'm thinking this is why it is not showing the right time. Please help me solve this problem!

Hi, just another problem.

sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com

this worked but whenever I close my lid and open it again, it goes back to the old time (dec 2021).

I would have to key in the code again and again to go back to real time.

Is there any way I can change this permanently?

You give no example of the discontinuity...(?)

How far off, a time zone away, off by years, wrong month, wrong day.... need something to go on here(?)

From Terminal.app you you can re-sync with Apple time servers, copy and paste:

sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com

If this is an Intel MacBook Air

I would reset the  SMC  How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Power up, login, connect to the internet, check all the settings you've previously verified and just use it. Or let it sit whilel connected. Things do not happen instantaneously; give it time, 24 hours at least, to reset time and date.

If it still doesn't set properly, that will call for more investigation.
