We continued to watch a movie before the 48 hour expiration and then it stopped playing at the 48 hour expiration time. Is that normal, it was my understanding that as long as you started it before the expiration you could finish watching it.

I believe the movie rental will be deleted from your library after 48 hours whether you finished watching it or not.
The above article says
"As soon as you play your rental, the rental is available for 48 hours before it's deleted from your Library."
Rentals have 30 days to start watching them, and once started, you have 48 hours to finish. They will be removed after 48 hours wether you are finished watching them or not.
This is perfectly normal.
