Mackbook Pro battery icon shows but the little plugged in icon does not show.

Are you at the login screen? If so, then the information presented on the login screen may not be accurate. Log into macOS to see if the information is updated and corrected. Otherwise, it means you have some sort of hardware issue (charger, charging cable, battery, Logic Board). Here is an Apple article for troubleshooting charging issues:
