My iPhone 12 Plus is up to date, but when I plug it into my Mac using Catalina, I get a message to update my software. When I click Install, my computer goes into an endless cycle and nothing happens. How can I get rid of this error message?

Contact your ISP.
Make sure your Mac has the latest version of macOS and the latest version of iTunes
Check -> Connect your device to your computer using an Apple USB cable & try also another USB cable.
Turn Off Hotspot.
Turn Off or remove VPN if necessary.
My iPhone is running iOS 15.5, which is current. It's telling me to update my computer software. I'm currently running Catalina, and I've tried to upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey, and all I get is a window that says "Checking for Updates" and that spinning circle that goes on and on and on! VPN is off.
Yay, glad it worked for you, enjoy the new OS and I hope it clears up your other problem but post back if it doesn't. And just think, if your iMac is new enough you can go through the same thing in the fall with Ventura!
Yes, it solved the other problem with my iPhone as well. Disappointed that my HP Envy D411a printer is no longer supported by Apple. There's no updated software for it, so I had to buy a new computer.
Restart your router and shut down your computer and then restart both of them. Don't have your phone connected when you do this and then try immediately to update your computer.
Thank you for responding, but there's nothing wrong with my Wi-Fi or Network connections. Even when I click on "Software Update" in System Preferences, nothing happens.
Is it telling you to update your computer software or iOS? What version and build are you currently running on your Mac?
