Finder COLUMNS getting squished

i had all my defaults set up pretty well and recently things have started acting weird.

for starters the COLUMN VIEW that i open finder in is showing squished name column so i have to pull the width out to something where i can read the file names every time i open a finder window. this is super inconvenient. any ideas? THANKS
