yes. you can go to this apple support page: Apple - Support - Technical Specifications
then enter the serial number in the search field.

Is this MacBook Pro a new MBP or a used one?
Who are you buying it from?
If it's not from Apple or OWC (MacSales.com) I'd seriously consider not doing so. You don't know what your getting.
With Apple you get an essentially new MBP with 1 year warranty and can add Apple Care to that. OWC gives a 3 month warranty. They are probably the premier 3rd party hardware provider for Apple.
I don't believe you can get the year and model from just the serial no. When applying for a trade in you're asked for the manufacturer, serial no., model, year, etc. so I don't think just the serial no. will be sufficient.
