Studio Display USB Connectivity Loss

Hi everyone,

I have the new Studio Display connected to an M1 MacBook Pro 14" via the thunderbolt cable that comes with the display.

I also have some peripherals connected to the display's USB ports: a Belkin Ethernet adapter and the receiver of a Logitech mouse.

The problem I now have is that sometimes (between 30mins and 3-4 hours) the USB devices get disconnected. That is I loose both my Ethernet and my mouse connection (I can still use the keyboard because that is directly connected to the Mac via bluetooth). I then have to restart the system to regain the connectivity.

Some additional things worth mentioning:

The display connection remains intact, i. e. I can still see the desktop
The Mac becomes sluggish the moment the USB connectivity is lost; it's unclear to me if that is due to the lost Ethernet connection or something else
I always have the MacBook lid closed when working with the external display; don't know if that is relevant
I don't have the power adapter connected to the MacBook

Any hints would be appreciated.

I can at least confirm that in my situation (Belkin Ethernet adapter, iPhone dock, and Logitech Wireless Receiver connected to display) the issue also only occurs when I connect the Logitech receiver to the display. If I connect the receiver to my MacBook directly instead, I did not have the problem so far. So the rest of my peripherals do not seem to provoke the problem. Obviously, it's still unsatisfying but at least I don't have to connect every peripheral manually.

I was able to localize the issue to my mouse. As long as I don't plug my Logitech USB-C wireless mouse into the back of the display, the hub seems to function without issue. So for now, I only plug in my Ethernet adapter and a Samsung SSD.

I have the same problem too. between 30mins and 3-4 hours all the USB devices that uses studio display port get disconnected. And unplug and plug in the usb cable does not solve the problem unless I unplug the thunder blot cable beteen mac and monitor.

I belive it is a bug as it happens both on my macbook pro --> sudio display and mac studio -->studio display.

And both my mac and display uses the latest firmware version(mac: 12.6 (21G115), Sudio display: Version 15.5 (Build 19F80)).

Engineers pleasee help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple had me reset the PRAM and reinstall the OS. I hope it fixes the issue, but I doubt it will.

Maybe the newly released macOS 12.5 update will fix our issue.

Sadly it doesn't look like a display firmware update is coming with this batch of updates.

Update: I received the new cable today. Plugged it in, connected my usb-c peripherals (mouse kb and hub) directly to the studio. Then I started watching a youtube video. 10 min in... Mouse/KB USB peripherals froze again. Sorry.. Really was hoping this was the culprit.

On top of the issue (same thing happens to me), WIFI also get disconnected after using Studio Display. I have to reconnect the TB4 cable from my mac (M1 Max MacBook Pro 16"). Very disappointing issue and it needs to be fixed ASAP.

Check Prevent & uncheck Wake, might fix/improve/change.

I have no mouse but a MS ergonomic keyboard and a Wacom Tablet connected. Both freezes randomly after an hour or so. I guess it's a deadlock in the driver.

Let me know what the support tells you should you call. Though I wouldn’t get my hopes up. 😄

Overall, it sounds like an issues that is fixable only via a software update for the Display or macOS. Let’s hope it happens!

Thanks but I am not as optimistic as you. =)

Later I also had the issue again even though my Mac was NOT in clamshell mode this time. So it seems the issue is unrelated to both the energy settings as well as the clamshell mode.

Looks like only a software update can help.

Thanks for your report. I am currently also trying to connect my devices directly to the MacBook although that obviously defeats the whole purpose of quickly connecting a non-stationary device such as a MacBook to the display.

So far I have not opened a case with Apple but will probably do that now.

Wow, sorry to hear that!

My cable is due within a couple of days so I'll be able to test it over the weekend, but it doesn't sound good.

Looks like we'll have to take our gear to the Apple store, unless Apple Support wants us to try something else first. Just wish it was easier to replicate consistently instead of being intermittent.

I have just gotten my monitor today and having this exact issue on both my Intel Mac Mini and M1 Pro MBP. Is this a hardware or software issue? Have apple acknowledged this issue?

I am thinking about returning it. For $1,800 monitor I would expect it to work properly…
