"rp2 quit unexpectedly" popup will not go away

I restarted my MacBook Air 2017 a few hours ago because it was running slowly, and ever since, a popup (picture below) has been showing up every few minutes or so. If I select "Ignore," it will show up on my screen again. If I select "Report" then it generates a report (it's fairly long but the first part of it is pictured below as well), and regardless of whether I choose to send or not send the report to Apple, the popup will come back a few minutes later. If I select "Reopen," then nothing happens.

"rp2" does not show up when I do a spotlight search, nor is it anywhere in Finder or Launchpad, and does not show up in the "force quit" section of the main drop-down menu - as far as I can tell, it is not an application thus I cannot delete, quit, restart it, etc.

Things I have tried:

  • restarting my laptop (multiple times) - the popup just resumes showing up after I sign in
  • shutting down my laptop - same thing as restarting it
  • opening my laptop in "safe boot" and signing in as a guest - the popup does not show up when I do this, but I can't carry out the functions I need to do unless I'm signed in regularly
  • running Malwarebytes - it listed a malware that it suggested I quarantine, which I did, and now when I use it to scan my laptop it shows it to be clean
  • checking "activity monitor" for anything resembling rp2 - nothing is there

Does anybody know what I can do? As mentioned I have the MacBook Air 2017, and the MacOS I'm running on it is Version 10.13.6

That's an error report asking you do you want to send it to Apple. Those happen when unexpected operations happen ... freezes and the like.

Option + Command + esc will bring up the Force Quit panel. That may work.

The larger question is what's going on with your Mac to cause such to happen and be unresponsive. At 5 years old, problems beginning to happen is not unheard of.

Is there a reason why you haven't upgraded to the latest OS? Your 2017 can take the very latest and you are several iterations behind. If for no other reason than latest security it's a good idea. But later versions always include bug fixes which may be your problem here.

Bringing up the Force Quit menu only brings up Safari and Finder (because those are currently the only applications I have running), and quitting Safari + relaunching Finder do nothing, unfortunately. The only reason I haven't upgraded my MacOS yet is because I don't have enough storage to do so, and while I have been doing what I can to free it up, I haven't run into any problems (until now, possibly) running the old one, so it hasn't been a huge priority. I'll see if I can upgrade today, though, which hopefully will help!

Thanks so much for your response :)
