Assuming you don't have a case, and the area is free of debris, the internal components may be failing as a result of rust, corrosion, or dampness. First, try a force restart - Force restart iPad - Apple Support

If the problem persists, you might want to make an appointment for iPad repair - Set up an iPad repair
