New SIM Card

I am switching providers so I have to switch SIM cards on my current phone. However, I do not have cloud storage to save all of my data and my Iphone is not allowing me to trust my Macbook Air, even after doing the recommendations provided and using different plugs. Can the temporary backup be used for switching SIM cards so I do not lose data or is that just when switching to a new phone?
