Hello,
Often I add text layers to images in Preview.
Is it somehow possible to save the edited files with layers intact and continue editing later?
(e.g. when using PNG the text layers merge with the background during saving.)

Save the image as a PDF before you add any text.
Wow, dialabrain, this really works!!!
I saved a PNG as (alt+Duplicte) PDF (default settings, see below).
Afterwards added text layers were preserved.
Thanks a lot for telling this secret!
Now Preview can do it all.
