Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I rented a movie from iTunes last night. I only got halfway through and I was going to watch the rest tonight. It says I still have approximately 24 more hours left on my rental but when I select play, it will not do anything. I've even restarted my Mac and iTunes.

I don't know how to resolve your issue, although it might help to reboot your router and disable any VPN, Use https://reportaproblem.apple.com/ to let Apple know you've been unable to watch the whole movie so far in case they can help and/or provide a refund.
