Keep getting self assigned IP on ethernet connection

I am using Xfinity modem/router and a Netgear splitter to create an ethernet connection in my home office. Wifi works fine, but I get better speed and more stable connection with ethernet. However, while everything worked fine a few weeks ago, now that I have returned from an extended business trip, I am getting this "self assigned IP" error message that won't let me connect. I can still connect through wifi. I have tried rebooting everything and following various instructions on resetting, including setting up a new profile and deleting certain files from the network preferences, but nothing is working.

Self-assigned IP is used on every device that is trying to connect to a Network, at the beginning of the Network connection process. Your Mac creates a self-assigned IP address that is used to identify it uniquely for the few seconds it takes for a Router to give out a "good" local IP address.

It is usually so fleeting that most Users have never seen a self-assigned IP address, and would likely swear theirs never does that.

It indicates that although the cable appears to be connected to something (otherwise you get a "cable disconnected" error because no syncs are seen) the Router is not providing a good local IP address.

So it is possible your network topology has changed, such as the netgear Switch has become disconnected from the Xfinity Router at one end or the other of its cable.

It is possible you have made manual speed settings that can not be satisfied by the Netgear Switch, so a connection [at the speed requested] can not be made, so no connection is made.
