Printer incompatibility

Is there any way to get the driver for an HP 6500 printer - that will be compatible with a MacBook Pro? HP no longer offers the driver. My printer was working until I put in an updated modem from Xfinity.

That HP OfficeJet 6500 inkjet printer looks to be eight or ten years old, or so.

Predates (lacks) AirPrint support, too. (AirPrint moved the drivers directly into the printer, which means we don’t necessarily need to find and load vendor printer drivers for most printer functions.)

Swapping the Wi-Fi router probably means the printer is either manually configured, or maybe needs to be reset.

If this document is not already familiar, see page 218 and following: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01669504.pdf

HP has an omnibus printing package that might have drivers.

Hi,

If necessary, you may want to check whether the HP 5.1.1 Printer Software Update download from Apple could be used (in spite of the system requirements). Look for something like one of the HP Officejet 6500 version 4.2.2 drivers listed in Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support. This would be entirely experimental, and may not work at all. Make sure that you have multiple backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, et cetera) before testing anything.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)

BTW, no HP Officejet 6500 model appears to be listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (US edition en-us, June 13, 2022). However, it is interesting to note that an HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-In-One E710n was mentioned as a supported AirPrint printer in an old (February 13, 2012) Apple article iOS: AirPrint 101 (HT4356).

Also, please note that older printers use 2.4 GHz wireless only, so check that your HP Officejet 6500 model is connected to the correct band/network.

Hello kateidTX,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with collecting a driver for your printer. The manufacturer would be the best resource for this information, so we recommend reaching out to HP for the best information about this.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
