If you have any drives formatted NTFS from being attached to PCs, that could be the problem.

MacFuse NTFS will let you write to NTFS volumes. If you are running into issues with a PC managed hard drive, and bringing it over to Mac, run MacFuse NTFS first and then mount the drive.
