Issue syncing watch with new phone

Looking to see if anyone else has this issue. I am trying to set up my series 2 watch on my iPhone. I have done a full reset of my watch erasing all data and settings. When I go to the watch app I am able to get the watch to connect to the phone. It then wants to do an update of the watch. The app goes off to search for an update but returns a message " update software on your iPhone". The iPhone is already at 15.5. The only thing I can do is reset the install. I have tried this on a iPhone X and Xr. Thanks.

FWIW a lot of people have had trouble updating a series 3 watch and a series 2 can only be worse. With the limited memory in a series 2 or 3 watch, your best option may be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar in an Apple Store near you and let them look at it:
