I am getting ready to purchase a Macbook Pro and Logic Pro to record and edit music shows. I have a 10" laptop now and love the small size for traveling, but, I am wondering how reasonable a 13" screen is for editing in Logic Pro. Any opinions on screen size requirements?
I'm running Logic Pro on a 17' MacBook Pro, and couldn't have a smaller screen. But then again, I'm used to working on 24' or dual screens and are using a bunch of tracks...
There are a lot of musicians running their stuff on 13's, but I would suggest you visit an Apple Store, and see for yourself; it's all about your eyes/sight, so it's hard to give pro and con... 🙂
I got a 13" for portability but exchanged for 15" because of the screen size. I do a lot of MIDI & audio editing work on the road so the screensize was too small for me. Not enough screen space to comfortably work in all Logics editing windows. I would keep it if I spent less time on the road and could connect it to an external display - but for me 15" made more sense.
I have a 15 inch with a separate apple monitor. Seems ideal to me - you get the bonus of running both screens if you're not traveling (desk on one, arrange on the other etc) and if you gig/travel you have a decent 15 inch screen to work with onboard. You can't undervalue screen space for actually being able to use a DAW. You could get a second monitor of any size and if cash is an issue, doesn't have to be apple or new I suppose.
Thanks for your replies. What is a DAW? I am only interested in recording on the road. Not editing. I will be hooking up to a larger screen in the studio. Will recording be difficult with a 13" screen?
If you're only recording, the 13" will probably be fine. Editing, in my opinion, is when you really need the majority of the visual real estate available.
