10.6.8 upgrade

Knowing the age of the computer will help us determine what it can update to.

January 7, 2006 to October 23, 2006 can only upgrade to 10.6.8 but need the 10.6.3 retail installer disc which looks like

does not say update, dropin, or OEM, and the followup with the 10.6.8 combo update from Apple's website.

October 24, 2006 to June 4, 2007 can do the same thing, and after upgrading to 10.6.8 can upgrade 10.7.5 Note, doing so removes PowerPC App compatibility such as AppleWorks. The 10.6.8 based update is installed via the App Store.

June 5, 2007 to March 14, 2010 can upgrade to 10.11.6 from 10.6.8 using the same installer disc as the base installer.

March 15, 2010 to July 21, 2011 come with prebundled 10.6 installer disc, and can upgrade to 10.6.8 from that, or have a Mac with 10.6.8 cloned over to it via target disc mode, assuming that Mac has no need for 10.6 anymore for license preservation.

No Mac newer than July 21, 2011 can install 10.6.8 or earlier. An option to install 10.6 server on Parallels possible, but more complicated.

Also from your statement, literally speaking, there is not a 10.6.x...

x is used to indicate any version of 10.6, including 10.6, 10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8.

So when you see documentation regarding 10.6.x it really means it will work on any of the above 9 versions of 10.6.

It doesn't mean there is some special version x.
