More questions: is that Mac exclusively yours, as in you are its only user, preferably its original purchaser, and no one else has ever used it before you?
Assuming yes to all questions, you should be able to remove a Profile by selecting it, then Remove: Change Profiles preferences on Mac - Apple Support. Step 2.

Done! and the Profiles preference disappeared, as predicted. I'm tempted to ask "how that thing got in there," but at my age I'm trying to go on a "need to know (and likely to remember)" basis, so I'll let it go. Thanks, John.
And, by the way, between my initial query and your first response, I WAS able to change my preferred browser from Safari to Chrome (though I followed through on your suggestion anyway just to see what might be up). So go figure.
