Setting Excel to be the default rather than Numbers, isn't working

I'm using a MacBook Pro with the M1 chip and I'd like to set Excel as the default for opening spreadsheets, .csv files, etc. Anything that Excel would normally open. I've followed these instructions (below), but Numbers continues to open anything that I want to open with Excel:

  1. Right-click on an Excel File (. xlsx, . xls, . csv, etc)
  2. Click on Get Info in the pop-up.
  3. Click Open With if the section isn't already expanded.
  4. Click the dropdown and choose Microsoft Excel.
  5. Click Change All...
  6. Click Continue when the Finder asks you if you're sure.

This worked like a charm when I did it on my old MacBook Pro. It's a different result with my new one.

I've followed these steps many times. Closed all programs, and restarted. My files are still opening in Numbers. I feel like I'm starting to spend more and more time troubleshooting the bugginess of the M1 chip.

Should I just delete Numbers? What's the best way to do that?

I do not understand why that is not working but it is what it is.

If you are not using Numbers, deleting it might be the solution to your problem. You can navigate to the Application folder (the main one, not the user/applications folder), and delete it there or you can open Launchpad, click and hold on the Numbers icon until all the icons jiggle, then press the "x" to delete it (similar to how it is done in iOS). I imagine it leaves some stuff behind, either way you do it.
