Do you mean the slider switch above the volume buttons? That's the mute switch. It will silence system sounds (but not music or alarms). If you mean something else, please explain.

If it is a small oval “window” it is the millimeter wave antenna.

Apple only offers mmWave hardware (and the associated antenna) in US model iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models.
mmWave networks are (somewhat) available in the US, but are not particularly available elsewhere.
mmWave is very fast, where it is available. mmWave coverage is much limited range and localized.
To the right of 1 (front camera) is part of Face ID, and a speaker slot. To the right and left of 3 (the Lightning connector) are holes for speaker and microphone, and two screws.
If you have a hole on the side—not the ring/silent/mute switch, or another button—maybe the SIM tray is missing?
