iPhone 13 Pro Max Sudden Screen Dimming Overlay

Ever had your iPhone 13 Pro Max randomly and suddenly dim the screen brightness? It’s not related to the auto-dimming. What happens comes on suddenly and with no warning and does not happen when the phone is noticeably hot and does not seem to be affected by changes in ambient light. Basically for seemingly no reason the whole phone display brightness will dip by what seems to be 30-40% in a split second. No warning shows, you check the brightness and can move it all the way up, but it’s literally no longer at full brightness. It’s like there’s a transparent black overlay on the screen. Then a few minutes later it randomly instantly goes to full brightness again. I feel like this is another random iOS bug that has gone unsolved for years because everyone assumes it’s the auto-dimming, but the auto-dimming happens slowly. This does not as it happens instantly.

The last reply was the generic first reply I was expecting. No settings are toggled when this happens - it should not be happening without warning, and if the phone believes it is related to temperature it should display an alert. Not displaying an alert makes the user think the display panel or phone is defective. I would expect this on a German car, but not an Apple product.

Hello 5m31k0,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

If we understand your post correctly, your iPhone Pro 13 suddenly dims and you've already checked auto-dimming and that isn't the reason for the dimming. We'd like to help!

Let's check to ensure that True Tone isn't enabled on your phone.

Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Also, check out the article about acceptable temperatures for the iPhone for it provides some reasons why your phone would dim.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold
