Can't scroll through Messages on MacBook

Running Monterrey 12. 4 and have already run Diskaid and attempted to scroll through Messages in safe mode- neither worked. Is there a setting that I'm missing to allow me to either cursor through messages using the up / down arrow keys or find a scroll bar to go up / down through the senders list and / or messages from a sender? Really irritating.
