Selecting payment options for Apple items

I've long had my valid Visa card set 'top of list' as my preferred payment. I also had $15 in Apple Cash hanging around just in case. Yesterday I finally sprung for 50GB of iCloud storage for $0.99/month, but instead of charging my Preferred option, today I have $14.01 in Apple Cash!

Not exactly a killer, but how can I change it to my Visa for the coming months?

If I can't, what happens in late 2023 when my Apple Cash balance falls below 99 cents? Thanks!

Hi ConradP99,

You can change the order of you payment methods, but the Apple balance is the first thing to be charged and then your next available payment method. This article has more information.

"When you buy items or pay for subscriptions, Apple attempts to charge your payment methods in this order:

  1. Apple attempts to use your Apple ID balance to cover the full amount.
  2. If you don't have Apple ID balance or you don't have enough to cover the full amount, Apple attempts to charge your primary payment method. The primary payment method is at the top of the list in Settings on your iPhone. You can control which payment method is at the top of the list.
  3. If there's a problem with the primary payment method, or if the primary payment method can't be charged for the full remaining amount, Apple attempts to charge your other payment methods in order from top to bottom. If none of them can be charged, Apple might try again."
