Migration assistant: will the data still be on the old mac?
If I use the migration assistant to transfer data to a newer macbook I've just bought, will it move the data or copy it? I'd like all the data from the old computer to remain intact.

Migration assistant will not remove any data from your "old computer." In essence, your "newer macbook" will be a clone of your old computer.

Doesn't wipe a thing, and the one copied can continue to be used as a separate "branch" where most data won't be sync'ed. The one warning I would have is that if you have syncing enabled over the same Apple ID, you might end up with things like Safari bookmarks copied over. And if they're deleted on one they get deleted on all unless syncing is turned off.
Great advice!
