My iPad Pro 2018 12.9 inch don’t charge

My iPad don’t charge through the USB-C port on the device, it only charges through the magic keyboard pass through. I also can’t connect to external displays via the USB-C port. Strangely, external storage device can be detected when plugged into the same USB-C port. I can also charge my iPhone through the iPad’s type-c port.


FYI the port has no debris in it, so don’t bother telling to clean it.

Begin with a forced restart of your iPad. While not guaranteed to fix a charging fault, so doing will often resolve a software related issue:


  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Be aware that most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow.


When using a USB-C Power Adapter, ensure that you are using a certified USB-C charging/data cable. For troubleshooting, an cable manufactured by Apple is recommended. You should also use a USB-PD complaint Power Adapter, rated at least 20W; again, a Power Adapter manufactured by Apple is recommended - as it will meet the required specifications.


If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support - and request a remote diagnostic test. You can contact the Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
